Facet Injections are injections of steroids into the joints that make up the posterior portion of the vertebral column. These joints can become inflamed as a result of arthritis or certain rheumatological diseases. If the arthritis is proliferative it can cause impingement of nerve roots ie, ‘pinched nerves’ in either the neck resulting in aching shoulder pain and headaches, or in the lumbar spine resulting in leg pain down to the knee. Facet joints can also be damaged from trauma and most notably from high velocity impact known as whiplash injury. The facet joints are a common but infrequently noted cause of headache, neck and low back pain. They are associated with pain that is not radicular in nature unless there is associated proliferative arthritis.
